The Moral Depravity of Fathers in A Doll’s House Fatherhood is universally associated with themes of dependability, authority and reliability. Ibsen’s A Doll’s House has a fair amount of fathers, however, few of them exhibit any of these characteristics. Instead of ensuring security for their families, fathers in A Doll’s House are disinterested in their children. Some of the fathers are renown liars, some are spreaders of the diseases of their infidelity and some cannot provide enough money to support their families but all fathers in this play are displayed as suboptimal human beings. Although A Doll’s House is famous for its themes of feminism, it is important that its obvious themes of misandry be discussed. Fathers in this play are portrayed as corrupt, as abandoners of their children, as liars and as spreaders of disease, proving that A Doll’s House is not a feminist work, but is in truth a play that encourages the hatred of fathers and to a lesser extent, men. There are notable instances of fathers who abandoned their children, beginning with Mrs. Linde’s father. Although the text doesn’t focus too much on the reasons behind Mrs. Linde’s financial problems, it is evident that her father and his absence is behind her financial struggles. Because she has to support her family without the provisions of her father, Mrs. Linde is forced into a marriage without love.
